New Cross-Industry Initiative to Support Node.js Education

The truth is that Node.js is growing up fast, however there is majorly short supply of expert vendors to provide training and education services to the enterprise on Node.js. “Each month we get calls from global enterprises where Node.js projects are failing because of lack of quality education”. Existing vendors have small teams with a very limited reach and an inability to scale.

nearForm’s mission is to change this and bring quality training on Node.js to large numbers of enterprises globally.

Background

nearForm have been one of the major driving forces behind Node.js’s early industry adoption. The company provides professional services, training and open source deployment and ops tools to the industry. According to Cian Ó Maidín, CEO nearForm: “It’s now time to for a high-calibre industry-wide initiative to drive Node.js into the mass-market”.

“In our life as a consulting company, too many times we have received SOS’s from team’s that have run aground on a Node.js project. The issue is that much of the value in Node is locked away in the amazing and open Node community, but the average developer doesn’t know how to interact with the community. Most developers also haven’t learned Javascript as a proper language and they end up applying unsuitable architectural patterns to their Node.js projects”.  According to O’Maidín: “Unfortunately the average developer doesn’t hang around on IRC (internet relay chat), and they don’t interact with the community or even know how to find them. The single most important attribute of Node.js is the community and to the average developer and this is lost.”

These types of experience are a major limiting factor to the success of Node.js. At present, teams all over the world are jumping in feet first without being adequately armed.

nearForm’s training is comprehensive and it has been designed to arm organisations with all the tools they need to be successful with Node.js. nearForm’s educational content is available on a licensed basis to 3rd parties, both to internal training departments and to vendors alike. “Our goal is to take Node.js to the world through partners”

Node.js MSc Curriculum: About the Qualification

university-of-limerick

The University of Limerick (UL) through its Continuing and Professional Development programme is committed to helping organizations to develop their employees and enabling individuals to improve their professional competence.  nearForm’s training course will be available from October 1st.  Participants will be required to complete a series of programming assignments, which will be graded by an examiner and verified with interviews.  On successful completion, participants will be awarded a certificate.  This award is currently progressing through the academic programme approval process at UL.  The award will carry 6 credits (European Credit Transfer System) at Level 9 (master degree level), making the conversion to US credits a simple arithmetic exercise.

The course has the following learning outcomes:

Students will be able to:

  1. Recognise and describe the major concurrency processing models, and in particular understand the implications of using the Node.js event-driven approach
  2.  Access and understand the core Node.js API
  3.  Access and understand the Node.js module eco-system
  4. Understand the prototype-based JavaScript language, and identify the key differences with other languages models (e.g. Object-oriented).,

Students will also understand how to:

  • ApplyNode.js and JavaScript industry best-practices.
  • Develop and deploy moderately-sized production-grade Node.js systems-
  • Locate, assess and use appropriate third party Node.js modules

Serving Industry Needs:

A major concern at present is that Node.js vendor certification is simply a tick-box marketing exercise and that developers will not be equipped for success. It is a common occurrence to find teams within large enterprises building applications in Node.js and it’s obvious that they haven’t had sufficient training. Project teams end-up painting themselves into a corner through a combination of using the wrong modules and applying the wrong patterns and architectures. This is a major obstacle for for adoption.

Helping to hire Talent:

The ability for enterprises to recruit high quality programmers is made far more attractive by the ability to add an academic qualification on a hot technology like Node.js has shown to be a major selling point. Similarly graduates are finding a Node.js qualification very attractive as some CS degrees don’t cover relevant, modern languages.

Roll Out by nearForm

nearForm are actively involved in training and educating some of the most prominent technology companies in the world. The first Node.js MSc classes and exams will begin in the UK and the USA in October.

Cross Industry Support

“When we scaled NodeJS development at PayPal from one application with a handful of developers to dozens of applications with hundreds of developers, our biggest challenge was proper training. The saving grace for us was how tightly we were connected with the Node Community. I applaud what nearForm is doing. Connecting the community’s collective wisdom to University certified education for Node development will fill a real need as Node continues its rapid adoption in enterprises worldwide.” – Bill Scott, Sr. Director of Business Engineering at PayPal

Node.js has seen unprecedented growth and success over the last few years. It is now used in nearly two hundred countries and averages over two million downloads per month.  As more enterprises adopt Node, they need training, support, tools, and services to successfully deploy their applications.  Training services from Nearform and others help address the needs of these customers.  Coupling Nearform’s expertise with a certification process at the University of Leeds will also help developers and  contribute to a thriving community.” - Scott Hammond, CEO Joyent

“At Skills Matter, we offer our developer community continuous opportunities to discover, evolve and adopt new technologies by inviting the world’s top innovators to share their expertise. I’m very proud of our partnership with nearForm. Through FullStack – our joint conference on NodeJS, Javascript and Hackable Electronics, through community talks, and through the expert-led training courses we organise together, we inspire and support many engineering teams with the successful adoption of node in their companies, helping them build better enterprise systems faster than ever before.  And thanks to the collaboration between nearForm and The University of Limerick (UL), we will now be able to offer an academic qualification to boot” – Wendy Devolder, CEO SkillsMatter

“We see the acceleration of the adoption of Node.js every day through our customers use of Modulus, our Node.js hosting platform. And we have seen first-hand the need of good training programs as members of new communities have discovered the benefits of adding Node.js to their solutions. We welcome the addition of this new academically backed curriculum, leveraging the strong Node.js expertise of NearForm“, saidEduardo Pelegri-Llopart, VP of Technology at Progress Software.

“nearForm, even though a small company, it is recognized internationally and I’m very pleased they have chosen to partner with CSIS in this initiative”

– Annette McElligott, (Head, Department of Computer Science and Information Systems (CSIS), UL).
